Although there are several large talus slopes in the Similkameen
Valley, none are as unique as the Sportsmen Slide just west of Keremeos
alongside Highway 3 on the slopes of Puddin' Head Mountain.
Formed over countless centuries of erosion rather than as a catastrophic event
as many believe, this massive talus slope is a rare
geological oddity. Comprised primarily of high grade Chalcedony and
Jasper, (a source of arrowheads for indigenous tribes) good quality rhodonite
can also be found on the rugged slopes.
The best
viewing area is from Sportsmen's Corner gas bar and Mariposa Fruit Stand.
If you are considering venturing onto the slopes themselves, be aware that the
land directly in front of the "V" area of the slide is private
property owned by Mariposa Fruit Stand. You can either ask permission to
gain access or approach the slide from the area just west of Sportsmen's Corner. Be
warned, however! Extreme caution is required! This is an active rock fall
and rattlesnake area!
