The Katahdin sheep is a hair sheep, developed in the USA from a mix of hardy, prolific breeds, including the native hair sheep from the Virgin Islands. This breed was developed to be hardy in hot or cold climates, non-seasonal breeders, with multiple lambs. Being a Hair Sheep, they do not expend energy in the production of heavy wool, so therefore produce considerably less lanolin than a wool breed. They are also produce lean meat, and have a better taste then other types of lamb. Their meat is prized by all that taste it!  The popularity of the breed is on the increase in Canada, as folks discover the excellent tasting meat, and the ease of management, with no wool to have to shear annually.

The Katahdin comes in many colours and colour patterns, everything from solid white to solid black.  Lambs are fast growing, and can attain 100 pounds in 100 days, with proper feeding.  Ewes are also heavy milk producers, and can more than supply twins and triplets with ample milk.

As you may have noticed, we LOVE colours here...so when we selected our foundation breeding flock, we chose pretty spotted stock, and hope to produce many spotted lambs in future!

So why did we decide on Katahdin sheep, when there are so many other breeds available?  Ease of management, no shearing, fast lamb growth, lean meat, general hardiness, and of course, colours!  Our goal is mainly production for our own family use, but we can offer the occassional lambs for sale as well, both breeding stock, and freezer lamb.  If you would like more information on our Katahdin sheep, feel free to contact us!
